A brief history

Smoky Mountain Scientific was started by Jack Summers when he was a chemistry professor at Western Carolina University, a campus of the North Carolina University system.  It grew out of a series of undergraduate research projects aimed at building student understanding of electronics and laboratory measurements.  We filed for 501(c)3 status to circumvent questions of conflict of interest and conflict of commitment.  Our intention is to spread the benefits of our work to other labs.

This is a stock photo. It came with the website.  Smoky Mountain Scientific does not employ the pretty young people that are pictured here.  We do, however, ride bicycles.

Where we are today

Smoky Mountain Scientific has sold instruments to scientists and educators across the globe.  Our main market has been to universities in countries where financial support is difficult to come by. We also have customers in large US institutions.
